The Peace Lutheran Altar Guild began the day by providing a continental breakfast. During that time, members and guests could also tour Peace with special attention paid to altar guild areas and local practices. This is always a helpful part of the day.
Pastor Ricky Schroeder and Pastor Josiah Fitch led the congregation in a magnificent worship service centered on "For All the Saints." We celebrated The Lord's Supper in communion with the multiple Lutheran church members present.
A business meeting followed, with Minutes read and Treasure's Report presented. Two new officers volunteered to replace our president and treasurer.
The main slide presentation was offered by Rev. Dr. Charles Cortright - his "Christian Liturgy - Beginnings to Luther" provided a fascinating look at how liturgy developed, expanded, changed and maintained traditions up through the time of Martin Luther. As we absorb changes in liturgy, Rev. Cortright unequivocally notes what is important - Christ and Scripture, Word and Sacrament. Our practices need to point to Christ.
We shared a lovely lunch in midday, followed by the afternoon's thoughts on practices individual altar guilds may follow - whether involved in a funeral, in decorating for everyday and/or for holy days, or in rites and rituals that churches may have developed over time. "Amazingly," the conclusion to the many questions that may arise is the same. Both presenters - Rev. Jim Schulz and Rev. Dr. Cortright - agreed: Our practices must point to Christ.
This beautiful day ended with installation of new officers, and prayer.
During registration, Elm Grove Lutheran from Elm Grove, Wis, displayed some beautiful banners of a size that could be used as side banners or for other purposes. The pictures taken by this author have somehow been lost, but if you took pictures of those banners, please get in touch by emailing altarguilds@wflag.org. Thanks!
